High Tea at the Westin Melbourne Hotel

A bright, sunny Melbourne Sunday was the perfect setting for High Tea. I was catching up with a few friends that I'd spent most of my final semester of University with (thanks to Design Project).

The Westin Melbourne Hotel was decidedly 'posh' all the way from the high ceilings to the large comfy armchairs and the polished floors.

We weren't there for the atmosphere of course, the food was the main attraction. We were ravenous, so waiting half and hour for tea/coffee, then another 15 minutes for food even though we had pre-booked was a little annoying. The waitress had promised to 'come back in a few minutes' while we were selecting our drinks from the extensive menu, but unfortunately I think she forgot about us. We'd read a few reviews saying that the service was bad so perhaps we'll actually pay attention next time.

All was forgotten of course when the food finally did arrive.

Decadence on a three-tier rack. The savoury dishes were tasty and surprisingly satisfying.

After scoffing down the sandwiches and the cute mini bagels, I started on the amazing array of desserts. As much as I love chocolate, I was happy that there was only a single chocolate dish. It was strangely gelatinous and nowhere near as amazing as the marscarpone and fresh fruit tartlet or the vanilla crème brulee with burnt maple chips.

The best morsel though? Their light and fluffy scones with jam and cream. My friends were laughing at me when I started eating the cream on it's own after eating slightly more than my share of scones. Final option, well worth a return visit even with the terrible service.
