Grigons & Orr Corner Store

On an uncharacteristically warm and sunny Melbourne day I headed down to Grigons and Orr Corner Store in North Melbourne for an early lunch, as recommended by the 2011 Cheap Eats Guide. The cafe was quite busy but I wasn't unhappy about having to sit outside. It meant I got to watch the steady stream of locals coming for their morning coffee and a quick bite to eat. The decor both inside and outside takes you straight to the 1950s, but it's all a bit of an act as the store points out: it was established in 2009.

Unfortunately it didn't taste as good as it looked. I'm not sure whether the machine wasn't cleaned properly or if it was for another reason, but the coffee was very weak and had a black tea aftertaste. Definitely not my idea of a good coffee. Could the food redeem the place though?

Well, perhaps somewhat. I ordered the Warm chilli cous cous with Moroccan spices, yogurt, roasted tomatoes and a poached egg. It was quite nice after the disappointment of the coffee. The egg was slightly runny and oozed deliciously into the cous cous. The roasted tomatoes were fresh and slightly sweet. I guess you'd go to Grigons and Orr Corner Store for the food, but I definitely don't recommend going for the coffee.
